Structure and function of the spleen
The white pulp and marginal zone constitute the immunologicaly active compartment of hte spleen. In the white pulp, there are two distinct regions, the periarteriolar lymphoid sheath (PALS) and the lymph follicle (LF). The marginal zone is located between the white pulp and the red pulp. The basic framework of the white pulp and marginal zone consists of reticulum cells and reticulin fibers. A distinct microenvironment is formed in the reticular framework of the PALS, LF and marginal zone, respectively. Immunohistochemically, the reticular framework of the PALS and LF is specialized into heterogenous components and the antigenic heterogeneity of the reticular framework may induce the segregation of the lymphoid subclasses in lymphocyte homing into the PALS and LF.
